The HDI is a summary measure for determining long-term progress in countries, using three basic parts of human development: a long, healthy life, access to knowledge and education, and a decent standard of living. Iraq is considered to be a "medium human development" country, which means that it is doing well in some ways, but needs improvement in others, or just falls at about average compared to other countries' HDI scores. Long-term progress for a country can be usefully determined when compared to the progress of other countries, and shown above in the far right figure. Morocco and Syria experienced different degrees of progress towards increasing their HDIs, as did Iraq.
Iraq's HDI is below the average of 0.64 (for countries in the medium human development group), and also below the average for countries located in Arab states. Countries which are close to Iraq (as of 2012) are listed in the table above.
